Words and Images by Sandy Sigala ~ Design and Printing Of Source! Press
Hung Out to Dry presents a reflective visual journey through Vietnam, documenting the presence of washing lines. Through the lens of domestic ritual, the book explores themes of absence, presence, class, gender, and the politics of cleanliness. Inspired by a personal history of observing laundry practices, Sigala connects everyday acts of washing and drying clothes to broader socio-economic and colonial narratives. The vibrant imagery and accompanying text challenge the stigma surrounding clotheslines, offering a counterargument to classist aesthetics that have led to their banning in parts of the Global North.
Blending personal memory, postcolonial theory, and environmental consciousness, Hung Out to Dry invites viewers to reconsider how mundane, habitual actions shape identity, history, and ecological awareness. Through this contemplative engagement with washing lines, the book turns an everyday sight into a thought-provoking exploration of visibility, labour, and the interconnectedness of private and public space.
